Michelle Sexton

Dr. Michelle Sexton is the lead clinician at the Center for Integrative Medicine's "cannabis clinic" at the University of California San Diego. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cannabinoid pharmacology at the University of Washington with Dr. Nephi Stella in 2011. She is a trusted pioneer in the use of medical cannabis and in the development of clinical education for doctors. She has been a member of the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicine and the International Cannabis Research Society for about 15 years.

Dr. Sexton is an integrative medicine specialist and respected pioneer in the field of medical cannabis. She has over thirty years of experience as a midwife, herbalist, and naturopathic doctor. She is a Medical Staff Professional at the Center for Integrative Medicine at University of California San Diego, formerly Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Sexton is the first Naturopathic Doctor hired in the UC system to provide general naturopathic medicine consultations and is the primary clinician for the ‘cannabis clinic’ at UCSD Center for Integrative Medicine (one of the first at a major academic center).  She is an expert in cannabinoid medicine and women’s health across the lifespan. She formally studied the endocannabinoid system with Dr. Nephi Stella at the University of Washington as a postdoctoral fellow, including its roles in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, developed some of the first medical cannabis education for healthcare providers in Washington State, and beyond, and was an editor on the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia Cannabis Monograph.

She is formerly a Board member at the Society of Cannabis Clinicians and Americans for Safe Access and co-director of the Center for Cannabis and Social Policy. 

She opened the first cannabis analytical lab in Washington State in 2010 and presented internationally the first human data on CBD for pediatric epilepsy in 2014 at the ICRS in Baveno Italy.  She created Green Women’s Guide, an online video learning experience, as a means to provide accurate information on cannabis and women’s health for the general public. 

She has authored the book "Eat, Sleep, Relax, Protect, Forget:  An Endocannabinoid Guide to Systems Wholeness for Women". 

Dr. Sexton practices medicine in California, speaks and teaches internationally and continues to study the therapeutic effects of cannabis and develop her expertise  helping women heal.
